Beyond Suffering – A study in the book of Job

The book of Job may be considered as a “sleeping giant” in the pages of our Bible.  It is arguably the best known yet often least comprehended book in the Old Testament.   The seminar will seek to engage the students in the process of interpretation as we search for the meaning and the message of this beautifully crafted book in the Bible.  Some of the topics that will be examined in the course are the following:

• Do Christians have an answer to evil and suffering?
• Why should we turn for comfort to the same God who allowed tragedy to strike in the first place?
• What crucial factors do we need to know in facing spiritual warfare?
• Who are the three blind mice with theological revolvers?
• How are we to handle the silence of God?
• Our ever-surprising God!

The book of Job offers its readers no pat answers.  However, it contains vital messages and timely help in sustaining the believer in time of crisis.  We pray that the insights and observations explored together will help us discover not only the “why” of human pain and suffering, but will point us towards the “how” to care for people when tragedy strikes.

For all participants, please read through the book of Job in preparation for this course.

• Dr. Paul C Wang currently serves as Vice Principal of Canadian Chinese School of Theology at Tyndale Seminary
